I know many people think that because of my worldview as a Christian, my mind is small and I am unwilling to be curious. The Bible doesn’t discourage curiosity. I feel like this is a myth perpetuated by many non-believers. In fact, many of the GREAT scientists who still have the long-standing work we learn about in our science text books were STRONG Biblical believers!
Let’s take a look at a few…
Sir Isaac Newton
- Known for his studies on gravity and motion
- Compiled the 3 Laws of Motion we still use today (thank him for your roller coasters…)
- QUOTED AS SAYING: “This most beautiful system of the sun, planets, and comets, could only proceed from the counsel and dominion of an intelligent and powerful Being. This Being governs all things, not as the soul of the world but as Lord over all!”
- Newton also believed that scientific inquiry could not exist apart from “the Maker”
Albert Einstein
- Famous for his theory of relativity
- He established a law between energy and mass with E=mc2
- QUOTED AS SAYING: “The more I study science the more I believe in God.”
- ALSO QUOTED: “The fanatical atheists are like slaves who are still feeling the weight of their chains which they have thrown off after a hard struggle. They are creatures who – in their grudge against religion – cannot hear the music of the spheres!”
Lord William Kelvin
- Noted for his theoretical work on thermodynamics, the concept of absolute zero and the Kelvin scale
- QUOTED AS SAYING: “I believe that the more thoroughly science is studied, the further does it take us from anything comparable to atheism.”
- ALSO QUOTED: “If you study science deep enough and long enough, it will force you to believe in God.”
Johannes Kepler
- German mathematician and astronomer who discovered the laws of planetary motion
- Kepler is considered to be one of the founders of the field of astronomy
- QUOTED AS SAYING: “Those laws are within the grasp of the human mind. God wanted us to recognize them by creating us after His own image so that we could share in His own thoughts. And if piety allow us to say so, our understanding is in this respect of the same kind as the divine, at least as far as we are able to grasp something of it in our mortal life”
These scientists (and many more…) were believers of God. Believing in God DID NOT prevent good science from taking place in their studies and we have them to thank for their many discoveries and contributions! (Especially the discoveries that stuck! The ones that didn’t vary in the science books…)
I’m actually going to take a moment to challenge you, the reader, right now. If you will truly investigate the Bible, it will change you. In fact, there are countless stories of those who made it their life goal to prove the Bible wrong and could not. C.S. Lewis being one such fellow. He was a very strong atheist who decided to prove Christianity wrong and instead became a believer. He’s quoted as saying “Christianity, if false, is of no importance and if true, of INFINITE importance. The only thing it cannot be is moderately important.” He also said…and I always find this profound if you truly think about it….”When you argue against Him (God) you are arguing against the very power that makes you able to argue at all; it is like cutting off the branch you are sitting on.”
Another fairly famous atheist turned Christian is Lee Strobel. He was an investigative journalist for the Chicago Tribune. His wife became a Christian and he set out to find the “hard facts” to prove to her she was believing in a bunch of fairy tales. In the process, he found more proof for Christianity than anything else…thus he himself became a Christian.
So again, I would encourage you to TRULY investigate the Bible. Dig deep. But please, don’t just listen to the words of people who have never actually read the Scriptures. I swear, that just drives me nuts. People who have never actually read the Bible, but think they can quote a tiny portion of it and all of a sudden have these profound stances on what it says don’t know what they are talking about. Does the Bible intrigue you? Good. Study it. Challenge it. Bring it on. The Bible is more than ready to handle anything you throw at it.
