ENTRY 13 The Gospel

Have you ever heard someone say “the gospel of Jesus Christ?” What is that? What do those words mean?

Well, very simply, the word gospel means “good news.” Therefore, the gospel of Jesus Christ is the good news of His coming to provide forgiveness of sins for all who will believe.

Romans 10:9 says “If you confess with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”

But saved from what?

Hell.

Eternal fire where there is weeping and gnashing of teeth. The scriptural descriptions of hell emphasize the torment and suffering that will be experienced by those sent there. So, no matter what you believe hell to be, it is described in the Bible as a place no one in their right mind would want to go.

But what if I don’t believe in heaven or hell?

That is always someone’s choice. I will say that a common philosophy today is “what’s true for you is true for you, but what’s true for me is true for me.” That sounds good on the surface, but unfortunately, we do live in a world of absolute truths. Just because you don’t believe in God, or heaven or hell, does not mean they don’t exist. If you and I were standing on a building and I said do you, “I don’t believe in gravity.” Does that mean if I were to step off that building I wouldn’t fall? No, it does not. Just because I don't believe in gravity’s existence doesn’t change the absolute truth that it does.

God has given us the power of free will so we get to decide if we are going to believe or not, but I would ask you to consider the example I just presented. Just because you don’t believe does not mean it isn’t real.

According to the Bible, mankind has been under God’s condemnation (Romans 5:12). Because we are all sinful and guilty, we all fall short (Romans 3:23). The punishment of sin is death and then an eternity spent in hell (Romans 6:23, Revelation 20:15 and Matthew 25:46)

That’s the bad news.

But there is good news! Amazing news!

Because of Jesus and His death on the cross, our sins are forgiven so long as we give our life to Him! John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only son that whoever would believe in Him would not perish but have everlasting life!”

The gospel message contains two historical facts both supported by Scripture: Christ’s death and His resurrection. Both of these facts are bolstered by other proofs: Christ’s death is proved by his burial and his resurrection is proved by eyewitnesses.

The Gospel of Jesus Christ is the best news anyone will ever hear. What a person does with this news will determine where he or she spends eternity.
