Where do you put your faith? Do you put it in man or in God?
I’d like to give you a little background on myself personally. I am a former middle school science teacher. I taught this subject for 10 years. You know what the most frustrating thing about teaching science is? Science books are ALWAYS outdated – it doesn’t matter how new they are, they are outdated the minute they reach your classroom. Now, there are some basic principles (laws) that have held fast for years, but there are always TONS of topics that constantly change. The first few years of my teaching career, the internet was just so-so by means of helping a poor science teacher out. My latter years, I could find the most recent information, but it was an ongoing research project as I did my best to teach my students the most relevant information on those topics.
Why do I bring this up?
To show you how man is fallible. The science books CLEARLY indicate we humans don’t always know what we’re talking about. We constantly screw up, get things wrong, and need to update what we know…or at least what we THINK we know.
I have no idea who my audience might be….young or old, but did you realize that from the 1930s to the 1960s DOCTORS recommended smoking cigarettes? Obviously, what we know now, that isn’t the best road to health, but back then those EXPERTS were recommending it. I actually have a little list of quotes, I’d like to share with you….here is a list of the Top 10 All Time Stupid quotes: (from Sean Covey's 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens)
#10 “There is no reason for any individual to have a computer in their home”
- Kenneth Olsen, President and Founder of Digital Equipment 1971
# 9 “Airplanes are interesting toys but of no military value”
- Marshal Ferdinand Foch, French Military Strategist and Future WWI Commander, 1911
# 8 “Man will never reach the moon regardless of all future scientific advances”
- Dr. Lee Forest, Father of the Radio, Feb 25, 1967
# 7 “Television won’t be able to hold on to any market it captures after the first six months. People will soon get tired of staring at a plywood box every night”
- Darryl F. Zanuck, Head of 20th Century Fox, 1946
# 6 “We don’t like their sound. Groups of guitars are on their way out”
- Decca Records Rejecting The Beatles, 1962
# 5 “For the majority of people, the use of tobacco has a beneficial effect”
- Dr. Ian G MacDonald, Los Angeles Surgeon, Quoted in Newsweek Magazine, November 18, 1969
# 4 “This ‘telephone’ has too many shortcomings to be seriously considered as a means of communication”
- Western Union Internal Memo, 1876
# 3 “The earth is the center of the universe”
- Ptolemy, the Great Egyptian Astronomer, the Second Century
# 2 “Nothing of importance happened today”
- Written by King George III of England on July 4th, 1776
# 1 “Everything that can be invented has been invented”
- Charles Duell, USA Commissioner of Patents, 1899
Now obviously, we have information today that makes these quotes sound ridiculous to us, but at the time these phrases were stated these people didn’t. They were clouded by their own perspective and available information they had at the time….and because we as humans are fallible they made these inaccurate claims. (I might also note, these individuals I’m quoting were considered EXPERTS or LEADERS to the many people who listened when they made their claims).
Therefore, if I’m going to put my faith in something….like eternity….I don’t want to put it in the hands of man. Even the smartest guy out there doesn’t really know what he’s talking about 24/7! The Bible has yet to be edited or changed over time. The Dead Sea scrolls proved that upon their discovery in 1947. So, for around 2000 years, it has stood the test of time. What other book do you know that can make that claim?
Now you might be thinking about the MANY current events we are dealing with today and wonder how I can make this “test of time” statement. But if you’ll hang with me, I will try to explain to you how all these issues and more are discussed in the Bible and why it is still relevant today.
Again, I’m going to start with the Creation account and give you information I doubt you’ve been shown before. We will go from there, but for now, I’d like you to consider where you put your faith. When I’m done with these “creation” posts, I hope you’ll be able to see why I am using FAITH as my basis.
